Description

Struck at Thessalonica between 308 and 310 AD, this follis belongs to the reign of Galerius (305-311 AD), Augustus of the East under the Tetrarchy. Thessalonica was Galerius' imperial residence, and its mint struck for him throughout these years.

The reverse legend GENIO AVGVSTI, "to the Genius of the Augustus", invokes the guardian spirit of the reigning emperor. The Genius stands left wearing the modius, a chlamys draped over his left shoulder, pouring a libation from a patera and holding a cornucopia: the emperor's provision and the abundance of the state, personified. A star fills the left field, and the mint signature •SM•TS• appears in the exergue.
