Local Issues: Baktria, imitation of ionian obol
Lot 1015 · Consigned by theferozacollection
Description
Obverse depicts roaring lion and reverse depicts boar with forelegs outstretched. An interesting piece as it has been speculated to have been minted under the Branchidae, a priestly clan in charge of the apollo temple at Didyma, a town near Miletus in Ionia who were resettled by Darius in exchange for their lives and the temple's treasure. They were subsequently resettled by Xerxes in baktria.
