Struck at the important Iberian settlement of Iltirta (later Roman Ilerda, modern-day Lleida), this striking denarius belongs to the vibrant monetary tradition of the Celtiberian tribes before full Roman domination. The depiction of a youthful male head adorned with pearls and encircled by dolphins on the obverse demonstrates a sophisticated artistic culture that melded Mediterranean and local influences. The reverse vividly portrays a horseman holding a palm branch, likely symbolizing victory or civic pride. Coins of Iltirta are highly prized by collectors for their distinctive imagery and excellent craftsmanship, reflecting a region rich in cultural interaction and fiercely independent before integration into Roman Hispania.
