Description

Laconia. Sparta. Circa 100–80 BC. AR Hemidrachm (15 mm, 2.08 g). Obv. Laureate head of Herakles right. Rev. Λ – Α. Amphora flanked by the caps of the Dioskouroi; monogram to lower right; all within a wreath. Refs: BCD Peloponnesos 853; HGC 5, 611. This rare late silver issue of Sparta reflects the enduring conservatism of Laconian coinage. The obverse head of Herakles, the archetypal Dorian hero, recalls Sparta’s claimed descent from Herakleid forebears, while the reverse amphora flanked by the pilei of the Dioskouroi alludes to the city’s most venerated divine twins, Castor and Pollux. The surrounding wreath adds a note of civic or agonistic significance, perhaps marking a festival issue connected with local cult practice. By the late 2nd and early 1st centuries BC, Sparta was but a shadow of its classical power, politically weakened yet still fiercely protective of its traditions. Its rare silver issues—produced in very small quantities compared with the bronzes of the period—were likely struck for specific ceremonial or local purposes rather than for wide circulation. Their iconography, however, remained thoroughly Spartan, preserving symbols that had defined the city’s identity for centuries. Condition: Attractive light iridescent toning, well struck for the type. Good Very Fine. Provenance: Ex Künker 182 (14 March 2011), lot 253.
