Description
After Alexander the Great's death in 323 BC, his generals (the Diadochi) continued striking coinage in his name for decades, both to legitimize their rule and because his coinage had become the trusted international currency of the Hellenistic world. The obverse depicts Herakles, from whom the Macedonian royal house claimed descent, wearing the skin of the Nemean lion. Early posthumous drachms like this were struck mostly at mints in Asia Minor.
