Description
Caria, Halicarnassus; c. 510-480 BC, Tetrobol or hecte, 2.11g. SNG Keckman-920 (Uncertain Caria), SNG Kayhan-812 (Kindya?), Kagin/Kritt-2 (Kindya). Obv: Head of ketos l. Rx Square segmented frame containing star, all within incuse square. The previously accepted attribution of these appealing coins to Kindya, persuasively argued in Kagan & Kritt, "The Coinage of Kindya," NC 95, has now been superseded, seemingly definitively, by the appearance in Roma E35, lot 279, of a related ketos type with the clear reverse legend 'AΛIKAP'. (Ironically, despite the legend naming Halicarnassus, the Roma coin retained the Kindya attribution.) Privately purchased from Ed Waddell, c. 2005.. EF
