Description
Lincoln Cent, ND (1959-1982)-1¢, MS65, RD, Saddle Struck on Split Planchet, NGC.A visually striking and technically complex mint error, this piece combines a dramatic saddle strike with a split planchet. The planchet had already separated along its internal metal layers prior to striking, leaving a thinner, often rough-textured surface that significantly altered the striking dynamics.
The saddle strike occurred when the compromised planchet bridged an obstruction or another coin within the coining chamber, resulting in a pronounced curved or “saddle-shaped” profile. The central portion of the coin received the strongest impression, while the peripheries display weakness, distortion, and incomplete metal flow, further exaggerated by the reduced სისthickness of the split planchet.
The exposed interior of the planchet may exhibit a fibrous or granular texture, contrasting sharply with the sharper design elements at the բարձրest point of the curve. This dual-error combination provides a compelling look at both a pre-striking metallurgical failure and a dramatic in-chamber striking anomaly, making it especially desirable to advanced error collectors.
