Salonina — Antoninianus, ROMAE AETERNAE, Eastern Mint

Description

Struck in 255–256 at an eastern mint, early in the joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus. Salonina, Augusta from 254, appears diademed and draped on a crescent: SALONINA AVG. The portrait is well defined, the waved hair and diadem clear, and the legend reads in full.

ROMAE AETERNAE — "To Eternal Rome." Roma, seated left with spear and shield, hands a small Victory to Gallienus standing before her: the eternal city conferring victory on the emperor. The group holds clearly, the legend softer across the top; a small flan crack enters at the lower edge.
