Cn. Gellius. Denarius

Cn. Gellius; 138 BC, Denarius, 3.82g. Crawford-232/1, RBW-962, Syd-434. Obv: Head of Roma r. wearing winged helmet, pendant earring and pearl necklace; behind, X (mark of value); all within laurel wreath. Rx: CN GEL / ROMA, Helmeted warrior in quadriga to r., grasping captive and shield. Gellius, a historian, is known for his Annales, a chronological history of Rome. Although it has unfortunately been mostly lost to history, other sources inform us that it contained about a hundred books and was massively more developed than other Roman annalists, only surpassed by Livy's gigantic History of Rome..
