Ptolemy III — AE Tetrobol, Eagle on Thunderbolt, Alexandria
Sold by Numis-Lens
$160.00
Description
Struck at Alexandria under Ptolemy III Euergetes (246–222 BC), third king of the Ptolemaic dynasty, this heavy bronze carries the bearded head of Zeus-Ammon, Zeus in his Egyptian form as Amun. The hair and beard stand in bold relief, with the central dimples typical of Ptolemaic bronzes.
The reverse reads ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ, "of King Ptolemy", around an eagle standing left on a thunderbolt, head turned back, a cornucopia bound with the royal diadem on its shoulder: the bird and weapon of Zeus joined to the horn of plenty. ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ reads clearly at left and the eagle's plumage holds well, the right-hand legend softened by circulation.
