Description
Struck at Ephesos in Ionia, circa 79–78 BC, this silver cistophoric tetradrachm belongs to the city’s dated civic coinage. The obverse shows a serpent emerging from the cista mystica within an ivy wreath, with the central serpent standing out against the toned surfaces. The reverse pairs two serpents around a bow and bowcase, with an owl on a palm branch above, the civic letters EΦE and date in the left field, and a torch at right. The entwined serpents remain clearly defined, while the upper devices are softened; small edge splits and green deposits are visible at the rim.Attribution: DCA 325; Kleiner, Dated 57Mint: EphesosWeight: 12.55 gDiameter: 25 mmCatalogued in the NumisLens cabinet — NL-D2HDR-5WZ2TCombined shipping is available — buy more than one coin and pay a single shipping charge.Attribution is believed to be correct, but ancient coin attributions can vary and the catalogue reference may be subject to revision.
