Sold by Numis-Lens

Description

Struck at Antioch in AD 335–337, in the last two years of Constantine the Great's life, for his son Constantius II - then Nobilissimus Caesar, the junior rank the obverse legend FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C records. Within months of his father's death he would take the East as Augustus.

The reverse legend GLORIA EXERCITVS — "the Glory of the Army" - shows two helmeted soldiers flanking a single military standard, spears reversed, hands on shields: the army as guarantor of the dynasty. The one-standard arrangement marks the reduced module of 335–337. Mintmark SMAN plus officina letter in exergue.
