Sold by Harlan J. Berk, Ltd.
Description
Julia Mamaea; 222-235 AD, Rome, ca. 224 AD, Denarius, 2.94g. BM-152 note = C-VII, p. 241. Obv: IVLIA MAMAEA AVG, Draped bust r. without stephane. Rx: VENVS GENETRIX, standing l. holding apple and scepter; naked child standing r. before. This is the first actual specimen confirming Cohen's description of such a denarius without Mamaea wearing a stephane on the obv. Since she wears a stephane on all of her IVNO CONSERVATRIX denarii, this confirms the earlier date of this type which has been indicated by hoard evidence. Ex Curtis L.
