Lysimachos was one of the Diadochi—the rival generals and successors of Alexander the Great. After Alexander's death, Lysimachos initially took control of Thrace. He officially claimed the title of King in 306 BC and expanded his kingdom significantly into Western Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) following the defeat of Antigonus Monophthalmus at the Battle of Ipsus in 301 BC

Unlike his more common silver tetradrachms (which famously depict a deified Alexander with the horns of Ammon), this bronze denomination specifically relies on pure military imagery. The reverse trophy highlights victory and protective power, which was crucial propaganda for securing loyalty across newly conquered Anatolian territories
