Thai Rattanakosin Gilt Lacquered Buddha Group

Thai Rattanakosin Gilt Lacquered Buddha Group, Early 19th Century. This is an unusual piece in especially large size. It was probably commissioned for a temple. Rendered in the Rattanakosin or Bangkok National style of the early to late 19th century, the piece depicts the adorned Buddha (common in Southeast Asian iconography) atop a massive plinth surrounded by four monks and the "Fat buddha” or Songachai distinctive to Thailand. Significantly below, the plinth is composed of myriad monks whose merit and lives the buddha represents in his quest for Enlightenment. Rare type, excellent condition and in large form. H. 20 1/2" W. 18 3/8" (52.1 cm x 46.7 cm)..
