Obv: Central Field: Islamic declaration of faith (Kalima) spread across three or four lines: لا إله إلا / الله وحده / لا شريك له "There is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner."

Below Central Field: Explicitly cites the name Ja'far (the Caliph's son and designated heir at the time, who later took the title al-Mufawwad)

Inner Marginal Legend: Specifies the mint and the Islamic Hijri year بسم الله ضرب هذا الدرهم بالمدينة السلام سنة تسع وخمسين ومائتين "In the name of Allah, this dirham was struck in Madinat al-Salam in the year 259."

Outer Marginal Legend: Features a Quranic verse (Surah Ar-Rum 30:4–5) لله الأمر من قبل ومن بعد ويومئذ يفرح المؤمنون بنصر الله "To Allah belongs the command before and after, and on that day the believers will rejoice in Allah's victory."
