Description
Roman Gilded Bronze Quiver Overlay, ca. early 5th-late 4th Century BC. A finely crafted decorative plaque featuring two winged Victories flanking a centrally placed lion’s head. The lion’s head is left in exposed bronze, while the surrounding surface is gilded, creating a strong visual contrast. Such plaques were typically affixed to leather or wooden quivers used by elite warriors, often serving both functional and prestige purposes. This example is likely associated with a Roman-period military context and may have belonged to a Syrian officer in an archery unit. An exceptionally rare surviving example of high-status military regalia. Ex HJB 139th Buy or Bid Sale, August 2004, lot 568. H. 4" W. 6 3/4" Depth 2 1/2" (10.2 cm x 17.1 cm x 6.4 cm)..
