Description
Jefferson Nickel, 2005-D, 5¢, MS64, Improperly Annealed Planchet. (Sintered), PCGS.
A fascinating and seldom-seen mint error, this piece was struck on a sintered planchet—one that was improperly bonded during the metal preparation process. Sintering involves compressing and heating powdered metal to form a solid blank; when this process fails, the resulting planchet retains a porous, granular structure rather than a fully cohesive surface.
Upon striking, the compromised metal is unable to flow normally under pressure. This often results in weak or uneven design elements, with a muted, “powdery” appearance and a lack of sharp detail. The surfaces may appear rough, matte, or slightly pitted, and in more severe cases, the planchet may show fissures, flaking, or areas where the metal appears to crumble or separate.
Sintered planchet errors provide a rare glimpse into the earliest stages of planchet production, highlighting a metallurgical failure rather than a mechanical striking issue. Their unusual texture and distinctive fabric make them immediately recognizable and highly desirable to collectors specializing in off-quality and pre-strike errors.
