Obv: ΛΙΒΙΑΝ ΗΡΑΝ ΧΑΡΙΝΟΣ Draped bust of Livia Drusilla (wife of Augustus) facing right

Rev: ΙΟΥΛΙΑΝ ΑΦΡΟΔΙΤΗΝ Draped bust of Julia the Elder (daughter of Augustus) facing right.

Ref: RPC I 2359, BMC 248, AMC 1229, Cop 467

This coin is highly valued by collectors because Julia the Elder was exiled by Augustus in 2 BC following a high-profile adultery scandal. Because her memory was suppressed after her banishment, coins bearing her direct portrait and name are quite rare. Furthermore, this particular provincial issue serves as a stark historical tool allowing numismatists to clearly distinguish the contrasting hairstyles and portrait features of Augustus’s wife versus his daughter.
