Caracalla AE26 Nicopolis ad Istrum — RARE Quadriga Triumph
Sold by Classiccoins.inc
$185.00
Description
A choice provincial bronze of Caracalla from Moesia Inferior, featuring the scarce triumphal quadriga reverse celebrated at Nicopolis ad Istrum.
Obverse: laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Reverse: Caracalla standing in quadriga driven right by Victory, soldier leading before, trophy and captives in field — the classic "triumph on the Danube" type.
This is the exact type catalogued as Hristova & Jekov 8.18.34.4 ("Rare type") and Varbanov 2431. Nicopolis, founded by Trajan as "Victory City on the Danube," struck martial types under Caracalla during his Danubian campaigns circa AD 213–214, making this a historical as well as numismatic highlight.
