Description
Nero, AD 54-68. Silver denarius. Rome mint, late AD 65-66. NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS – laureate head of Nero right ▸ SALVS – Salus, personification of public health and safety, seated left on high–backed throne, extending a patera and resting left arm at side; dotted border. RIC I² 60; BMC 90; Cohen 314. 17 mm; 3.32 g; 6 h. Bright surfaces with pale gold toning in recesses, some old cleaning marks and light scratches but detail clear; very fine.
Struck at the height of Nero’s reign—shortly after the Great Fire and before the Pisonian conspiracy—the reverse invokes Salus to assure Romans that the emperor was safeguarding both the city’s physical wellbeing and its political order. The type accompanied a raft of public works and relief measures Nero promoted in the fire’s aftermath, using religion and coinage to rebuild confidence even as dissent simmered among the elite.
