Description

Nero, AD 54-68. AR denarius, Rome mint, struck circa AD 64-65; 17 mm, 3.28 g, 6 h. NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS – laureate head of Nero right, hair arranged in luxuriant overlapping curls ▸ IVPPITER CVSTOS – Jupiter Custos (“the Guardian”) seated left on high, ornamented throne, holding thunderbolt and vertical sceptre; ground-line beneath. RIC I² 53; BMC 74; Cohen 119. Sharply struck in unusually high relief for the series, legends bold; lightly scratched and somewhat aggressively cleaned in the past, but detail remains crisp and metal sound.

Issued in the aftermath of the Great Fire of Rome (July AD 64), the Jupiter Custos type proclaimed that the city’s chief god had safeguarded both princeps and populace, countering rumours that Nero himself had ignited the conflagration. By invoking the deity as “Custodian,” the coinage sought to reassure a traumatised capital and re-frame Nero’s massive rebuilding programme—financed in part by new silver such as this—as an act of piety rather than profligacy.
