Captured by Alexander in 331 BC, Babylon became a principal mint for his imperial silver coinage. The Herakles/Zeus type with the legend “of King Alexander” publicized royal authority across the former Achaemenid territories and provided a high‑grade currency for military payments and administration. Babylon issues such as this circulated widely and continued to be produced by successors after Alexander’s death, forming a key monetary standard of the Hellenistic world.
