Eucratides I, drachm, silver, reign 171–145 BC, struck 171–145 BC, 4.18 g, 21 mm. Greco‑Bactrian Kingdom, uncertain mint. Anepigraphic obverse with diademed and draped bust of the king right within a beaded border. Reverse BAΣIΛEΩΣ EΥKΡATIΔOΥ; the Dioskouroi on rearing horses right, each with spear; monogram below. Struck on a broad flan to the Attic standard. References: BIGR Eucratides I 6.12; Bopearachchi Série 6, 40. Eucratides I governed the Greco‑Bactrian Kingdom during the mid‑2nd century BC, a period marked by warfare with Parthian and Indo‑Greek rivals and by expansion toward northwestern India. His extensive silver issues, including the Dioskouroi type, were produced on the Attic standard and are attested by hoards across Afghanistan and the Punjab region. The type employs Greek cavalry imagery and Greek legend to assert Hellenic royal authority in Central Asia, and the series provides key data for the chronology and geography of the late Greco‑Bactrian state.
