Description
Trajan, Sestertius, bronze, reign AD 98–117, struck at Rome AD 114–117, 25.9 g, 33 mm. Obverse: IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS VI P P; laureate, draped bust right. Reverse: SENATVS POPVLVSQVE ROMANVS around; Fortuna Redux seated left on low chair, feet on footstool, holding rudder set on ground in right hand and cornucopia in left; S C in field; FORT RED in exergue. Broad flan, well-centered strike with legible legends; dark olive patina with minor surface roughness and light wear on the high points. Reference: RIC II Trajan 652 (sestertius).
This type invokes Fortuna Redux, the deity of safe return, and belongs to Trajan’s late issues after he was styled Optimus in AD 114 during the Eastern (Parthian) expedition. The reverse proclaims senatorial authority for the bronze coinage (S C) and broadcasts the Senate and People of Rome (spelled out in full) endorsing the hope for the emperor’s safe homecoming, with the rudder symbolizing guidance of the state and the cornucopia prosperity under his rule.
