Description

Nero, Tetradrachm, silver, reign AD 54–68, Alexandria, AD 65–66 (regnal year 12); 12.80 g; 24 mm. Obv: ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ, radiate bust of Nero right, wearing aegis. Rev: ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑ; bust of Alexandria right wearing elephant headdress; L IB in right field indicating year 12. Struck at Alexandria for the local Egyptian currency system, dated by regnal year. Reference: RPC I 5289.

Issued within Egypt’s closed monetary system, this tetradrachm was the principal silver denomination used locally and did not circulate widely outside the province. The regnal date L IB fixes production to AD 65/66, the year of the Pisonian conspiracy at Rome. The reverse personification of Alexandria with elephant headdress is the city’s standard emblem on Roman provincial coinage and identifies the mint, while the Greek imperial titulature underscores Nero’s authority in Egypt, the empire’s key grain supplier.
