Description
Nero, Tetradrachm, silver, reign AD 54–68; struck at Alexandria, regnal year 13 (AD 66/67); 12.90 g; 25 mm. Obverse: ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ ΑΥ, L ΙΓ; radiate bust of Nero left, wearing aegis; regnal date L ΙΓ (year 13) in field. Reverse: ΘΕΟΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ; radiate head of Augustus right. Struck on the standard Alexandrian flan with complete Greek legends and clear date. RPC I 5294.
Issued within Egypt’s closed provincial currency system, this Alexandrian tetradrachm links Nero to the deified founder of the Principate by naming and portraying Augustus as Theos Sebastos. The pairing underscores imperial cult practice and dynastic legitimacy in Egypt, and the L ΙΓ date fixes the coin to AD 66/67, the opening phase of the First Jewish Revolt and a period of tension in Alexandria, providing a precise chronological reference for the provincial series.
