Description

Nero, Tetradrachm, silver, reign 54–68, struck 65–66, 12.9 g, 24 mm. Alexandria mint. Obv: ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ; radiate bust of Nero right, wearing aegis. Rev: ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑ, L ΙB; bust of Alexandria right, wearing elephant headdress; L IB indicating regnal year 12 (AD 65/66). Struck on the local Alexandrian tetradrachm standard, centered with clear date and types. Reference: RPC I 5289. Issued within the closed currency system of Roman Egypt, this dated Alexandrian tetradrachm marks Nero’s regnal year 12 (29 Aug 65–28 Aug 66). The reverse personification of Alexandria with the elephant headdress reflects long-standing Ptolemaic iconography and proclaims the city’s identity and links to Africa and the East. Such pieces circulated only in Egypt and underpinned the provincial economy that supplied Rome with grain in the emperor’s final years, on the eve of the unrest that began in 66.
