Description

Nero, Tetradrachm, silver, reign AD 54–68, Alexandria, year 13 = AD 66/67, 12.8 g, 24 mm. Obverse: ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ ΑΥ, L ΙΓ; radiate bust of Nero left, wearing aegis. Reverse: ΘΕΟΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ; radiate head of Augustus right. Struck at Alexandria with regnal year L ΙΓ in the field; Greek legends and dynastic portraits characteristic of the provincial series. Reference: RPC I 5294.

Struck in Nero’s regnal year 13, this Alexandrian tetradrachm links the reigning emperor to the deified Augustus (ΘΕΟΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ), advertising dynastic continuity and the imperial cult in Roman Egypt. The type belongs to the closed monetary system of Egypt, where tetradrachms served as the principal large denomination and were dated by regnal year. The 66/67 issue coincides with the opening phase of the First Jewish Revolt, reflecting ongoing fiscal and administrative activity in the eastern provinces under Nero.
