Description

Alexander III, tetradrachm, silver, reign 336–323 BC, struck c. 325–323 BC at Acre (Ake); 17.10 g, 25 mm. Anepigraphic obverse with head of Herakles right, wearing the Nemean lion skin headdress. Reverse: BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ; Zeus Aëtophoros seated left on a backless stool-throne, holding eagle on extended right hand and sceptre in left; control marks in left field and beneath the throne. Posthumous issue on the Attic standard, struck on a broad flan with typical die axis about 12h. Price 3287.

Struck at the Phoenician port of Ake (Acre/Ptolemais), this posthumous Alexander tetradrachm represents the continuation of his monetary types after 323 BC by regional authorities to maintain fiscal stability and troop payments. The standardized Attic-weight coinage and the enduring Herakles–Zeus design ensured wide acceptability across the eastern Mediterranean, anchoring the transition from imperial to successor-state economies in the Levant.
