Description

Plautilla, denarius, silver, reign 202–205, struck at Rome 202–205, 3.27 g, 19 mm. PLAVTILLA AVGVSTA; draped bust right with waved hair gathered in a bun. PIETAS AVGG; Pietas standing right, holding scepter and child at her side. Even strike on a compact flan with complete legends and clear central devices. RIC IV Caracalla 367.

Daughter of the praetorian prefect Plautianus and wife of Caracalla, Plautilla married into the Severan dynasty in 202 as part of a political alliance engineered by Septimius Severus. Her coinage was issued mainly from Rome until 205 and emphasizes dynastic loyalty; the AVGG formula refers to the two Augusti, Severus and Caracalla, while the child held by Pietas advertises expectations of heirs. After the downfall of Plautianus in 205, Plautilla was divorced, exiled to Lipari, and executed in 212, and her issues ceased with her exile.
