Claudius Bronze Quadrans – A.D. 41 – RIC I # 84 – Rome Mint

This coin was struck in A.D. 41, during the first year of Emperor Claudius’s reign. Claudius, known for his unexpected rise to power and administrative reforms, issued this Quadrans—a small bronze denomination—at the Rome mint. The coin’s design reflects both imperial symbolism and civic utility.

Several times during Claudius’ reign, bread riots broke out in Rome. Designs such as this were part of an ongoing publicity effort to reassure Romans of the adequacy & stability of the grain supply from North Africa.
