Description
Roman Imperial Period, circa 1st–2nd century AD. Intaglio in Heliotrope (Bloodstone). An oval gem engraved with the bust of a veiled female figure in profile to right, draped and wearing a himation pulled over her head. The portrait is carved with fine linear detail, emphasizing the folds of the veil and the dignified expression of the sitter. The deep green heliotrope matrix, enlivened by scattered red inclusions, provides a striking natural contrast to the crisp cutting. This type of intaglio may represent a goddess associated with modesty and fertility, such as Demeter or Hera, or else a noble Roman matron. Gems of this quality were treasured both as seals and as expressions of cultural identity within elite society. Dimensions: 17 × 13 mm Condition: Very fine, with sharp engraving and traces of surface deposits; attractive coloration. Provenance: From a European private collection.
