Description

Roman Imperial Period, circa 1st–2nd century AD. Intaglio in Heliotrope (Bloodstone). An oval gem engraved with a finely detailed male bust in profile to right, wearing a crested Corinthian-style helmet with flowing plume and drapery at the neck. The figure’s beard and curling locks are carefully indicated, emphasizing both martial strength and intellectual gravitas. The natural heliotrope, a deep green stone flecked with vivid red spots, enhances the dramatic effect of the portrait. Intaglios of helmeted warriors or heroic figures were popular subjects in the Roman world, symbolizing virtues of courage, leadership, and divine protection. Gems of this quality would have served as both personal seals and as amulets imbued with protective meaning. Dimensions: 18 × 14 mm Condition: Very fine, with sharp cutting and rich coloration of the stone; minor surface deposits. Provenance: From a European private collection.
