Description
Hellenistic or Roman Period, circa 1st century BC – 1st century AD. Intaglio in Heliotrope (Bloodstone). An oval gem engraved with the bust of a draped philosopher in profile to right, his hair arranged in thick curls and with a full beard, conveying a grave and intellectual expression. The carving is executed in a confident linear style, the folds of the cloak carefully indicated at the shoulder. Heliotrope (bloodstone) was a prized material in antiquity, valued for both its hardness and its deep green color with occasional red inclusions. Gems of this type were set in signet rings and often carried as symbols of learning and authority. The depiction of a philosopher reflects the high cultural esteem for wisdom and intellectual pursuit in the Greco-Roman world, particularly during the Hellenistic and Imperial periods. Dimensions: 22 × 16 mm Condition: Very fine, the engraving sharp and with attractive translucency to the stone; light surface deposits. Provenance: From an old European collection.
