Description

Diomedes, Tetradrachm, Silver, Indo-Greek Kingdom, 115–105 BC, 9.80 g, 27 mm. Uncertain royal mint. Obverse: Diademed and draped bust right; legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ ΔΙΟΜΗΔΟΥ. Reverse: Kharosthi legend MAHARAJASA TRATARASA DIYVMITASA; the Dioskouroi on rearing horses right, each holding a palm frond and spear; monogram in lower right field. Struck on a broad flan with peripheral legend weakness and light surface porosity; minor edge roughness. Rare issue. Bopearachchi 3A; HGC 12, 279. This bilingual silver tetradrachm documents Indo-Greek authority in northwestern South Asia during the late second century BC. The Greek and Kharosthi legends identify Diomedes as “Soter” (Saviour), signaling royal claims familiar in Hellenistic titulature while addressing both Greek and local audiences. The Dioskouroi type, shared with earlier Graeco-Bactrian issues, reflects continuity of Hellenistic military and dynastic iconography adapted to the Indian standard and fabric, and the uncertain mint points to the fragmented political landscape of the later Indo-Greek realm.
