Bilingual Greek–Kharosthi issue; struck on a compact flan with most obverse legend visible; reverse with partial legend and minor surface roughness. Ref: Bopearachchi 16E; SNG ANS 868–874. Menander I (Soter) was the most prominent Indo-Greek ruler, extending Greco-Macedonian control across the Punjab and consolidating trade routes between Bactria and the Indian subcontinent. His coinage is the primary evidence for his reign, employing Greek and Kharosthi legends to serve mixed populations and using the Macedonian Athena Alkidemos type to assert royal authority. The bilingual silver issues became the model for later Indo-Greek series, and literary tradition identifies him with the Buddhist interlocutor “Milinda” of the Milindapañha.
