Description

Philoxenos Aniketos, tetradrachm, silver, 125–110 BC, Paropamisadai or Gandhara mint, 9.33 g, 27 mm. Obverse: diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Philoxenos right; legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΙΚΗΤΟΥ ΦΙΛΟΞΕΝΟΥ. Reverse: Kharosthi legend MAHARAJASA APADIHATASA PHILASINASA; king on horseback prancing right; monogram in right field. Struck on a broad, slightly irregular flan with the reverse well centered; obverse marginally off center with light porosity consistent with fabric of the series. References: Bopearachchi 3E; SNG ANS 1183–1186. This bilingual silver issues of the Indo-Greek king Philoxenos (“Aniketos,” meaning Invincible) reflect Hellenistic authority operating in the Paropamisadai–Gandhara region during the second century BC, using Greek and Kharosthi legends to address both Greek and local populations. The horseman reverse is a recurring regional military motif and signals royal mobility and control over frontier territories following the fragmentation of earlier Indo-Greek realms.
