Description

Philoxenos Aniketos; Tetradrachm; Silver; reign 125–110 BC; struck 125–110 BC; 9.49 g; 27 mm; Paropamisadai or Gandhara mint. Obverse: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΙΚΗΤΟΥ ΦΙΛΟΞΕΝΟΥ; diademed and draped bust right, wearing crested Macedonian helmet adorned with bull’s horn and ear. Reverse: Kharosthi legend MAHARAJASA APADIHATASA PHILASINASA; Philoxenos in military attire on horse rearing right; monogram below. Struck on a broad, slightly irregular flan; legends largely complete; reverse centered with clear monogram. Bopearachchi 5 var. (monogram); SNG ANS 1187; HGC 12. Philoxenos’ bilingual silver issues exemplify the Hellenistic–South Asian synthesis of the Indo-Greek Kingdom, pairing Greek and Kharosthi legends to address mixed constituencies across Paropamisadai and Gandhara. The helmet with bull’s horn and the mounted king type reflect military authority and local steppe influences, while the epithet Aniketos (“Unconquered”) underscores the competitive political landscape of the late 2nd century BC among Indo-Greek rulers.
