Description
Vespasian, Denarius, Silver; reign AD 69–79; Rome mint, AD 75; 3.35 g; 18.5 mm. Obverse: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head right. Reverse: PON MAX TR P COS VI, Pax, naked to waist, seated left, extending branch in right hand, left hand in lap. Rome issue struck on a standard denarius flan, die axis about 6h. Reference: RIC II, Part 1 (second edition) Vespasian 772. This type belongs to Vespasian’s early Flavian coinage and marks his sixth consulship in AD 75. The Pax reverse was used to publicize the restoration of order after the civil wars of AD 68–69 and the conclusion of the Judaean War, aligning the new regime with themes of stability and reconciliation promoted throughout the empire.
