Description

Cassander, Tetradrachm, Silver; reign 305–297 BC; Pella mint, struck 305–297 BC; 17.10 g, 26 mm. Obv: Anepigraphic; head of Herakles right, wearing lion-skin headdress. Rev: ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ; Zeus seated left on backless throne, holding long scepter in left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in right; trident upright in left field; A above pellet beneath throne. Struck on a broad flan; reverse legend and bead border complete; obverse border partly off flan at lower left. Ref: Price 261. This issue belongs to the post-Alexander coinage struck under Cassander at Pella, retaining the name of Alexander to ensure continuity of the Macedonian monetary standard across the Balkans and Aegean during the Wars of the Successors. The trident control mark and A-over-pellet beneath the throne identify the Pella series attributed to Cassander’s administration, reflecting his consolidation of Macedonia and funding of operations against Antigonid rivals after assuming the royal title in 305 BC.
