Description
Alexander III, Tetradrachm, silver, reign 336–323 BC, struck 330–320 BC at Byblos; 17.10 g; 26 mm. Obverse anepigraphic: head of Herakles right, wearing the lion-skin headdress. Reverse ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ; Zeus Aëtophoros seated left on a backless throne, holding eagle and scepter; ΑΡ in left field. Struck on a broad, centered flan with full legend; obverse from a slightly worn die; reverse with light die rust and minor surface roughness. Reference: Price 3426. Issued from the Phoenician port of Byblos after Alexander’s conquest of the Levant in 332 BC, this tetradrachm belongs to the principal silver currency that financed Macedonian administration and circulated widely across the eastern Mediterranean. The Herakles and Zeus types reflect Alexander’s claimed heroic lineage and divine sanction, while the control letters identify the Byblos series as cataloged by Price.
