Description
Philip III Arrhidaios, tetradrachm, silver; reign 323–317 BC, struck 323–317 BC at Sidon; 17.10 g; 26 mm. Obv: anepigraphic; head of Herakles right, wearing the lion-skin headdress. Rev: ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ; Zeus Aëtophoros seated left on backless throne, holding eagle and scepter; M (date) in left field, ΣI below throne; struck under Laomedon; dated Regnal Year 12 of Abdalonymos (322/1 BC). Struck on the Attic standard, centered on a broad flan with granular surfaces and minor edge irregularity. Reference: Price 3498. This Sidonian issue belongs to the post-Alexandrian coinage struck in the name of Alexander during the regency of Philip III Arrhidaios. Control marks tie it to the administration of the satrap Laomedon and to the local regnal era of King Abdalonymos, allowing precise dating to 322/1 BC. Such issues financed garrisons and fleets in the early Diadoch period and illustrate the continuation of Alexander’s monetary types as a unifying currency across the former empire.
