Description

Nero, Tetradrachm, silver; reign AD 54–68, Antioch mint, Year 114 of the Caesarean Era (AD 65–66). 14.25 g, 25 mm. Obverse: ΝΕΡΩΝ ΚΑΙΣΑΡ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ; laureate head of Nero left, aegis at neck. Reverse: ΕΤΟΥΣ ΔΙΡ; eagle standing right on club; palm branch to left. Struck on a broad flan, die axis 12h. Reference: RPC I 4191. Issued at the provincial capital of Syria, this tetradrachm represents the principal silver currency of the eastern provinces under Nero. The reverse date ΕΤΟΥΣ ΔΙΡ equals Year 114 of the local Caesarean Era, fixing the issue to AD 65/66, on the eve of the First Jewish Revolt. The eagle and palm continue Hellenistic iconography long used on Syrian silver, while the Greek titulature reflects the coin’s intended circulation in the Greek-speaking East and its role in paying the Syrian legions and facilitating regional trade.
