Description
Eucratides I, drachm, Silver, reign 171–145 BC, struck 171–145 BC, uncertain mint; 4.24 g. Anepigraphic obverse with diademed and draped bust of Eucratides right. Reverse legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΕΥΚΡΑΤΙΔΟΥ; the Dioskouroi on rearing horses right, each holding a spear; monogram below. Struck on the Attic standard on a broad flan, consistent with the early series for this reign. Bopearachchi Série 1D; SNG ANS 432. Eucratides I seized the Greco‑Bactrian throne and restored central authority over Bactria and parts of northwestern India, issuing large silver coinages that circulated widely across the Oxus and Indo‑Greek regions. The Dioskouroi reverse advertises Hellenic royal and cavalry associations, while the anepigraphic portrait obverse reflects Hellenistic royal types adapted for the eastern frontier. His coinage reform and expansive military campaigns mark a high point of Greco‑Bactrian power before the kingdom’s fragmentation.
