Septimius Severus — Denarius, P M TR P VI COS II, Rome

Struck at Rome across AD 197 and 198, a year on from the Sol denarius of TR P V and separated from it by exactly that.

The obverse is L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP X, the acclamation count now up to ten, over a laureate head right. P M TR P VI COS II P P on the reverse takes the tribunician power into its sixth year. Sol stands left, radiate, naked but for the cloak, right hand raised and whip in the left.

Attributions are my own, made from the references listed. Ancient coins are not always

straightforward, and a reference can turn out to be wrong or open to argument, so please

study the photographs. They are part of the description, and if you read the coin

differently I would like to know.
