Description
SICILY Syracuse Timoleon
AE Dilitron
Several dealers miscite this as HGC 6, 1439; Sicilian issues are in HGC volume 2 (HGC 2, 1439). The reverse horse is described as rearing, galloping, or prancing across catalogues.
Timoleon was sent from Corinth in 344 BC, deposed Dionysios II, and defeated a far larger Carthaginian army at the river Crimisus in 341 BC. The obverse legend names Zeus the Liberator.
Check out my other auctions. I'll be running a good number of $1 starts with no reserve. In particular I will be running other Syracuse Greek bronzes of Sicily.
