Description
This outstanding late Roman bronze centenionalis was struck between 351–353 AD at the Lugdunum mint under the brief, ill-fated Western Caesar Decentius, brother to the usurper Magnentius. The obverse features a remarkably crisp, bare-headed, cuirassed bust with the clear legend D N DECENTIVS NOB CAES. The reverse exhibits two beautifully defined, winged Victories facing each other while supporting a shield inscribed with the standard imperial vows VOT V MVLT X. Cloaked in a smooth, dark chocolate-brown patina with highly defined high-points and clear legends on both sides, this is an excellent type specimen for any collector specializing in Roman provincial usurpers or the Constantinian era.
