Description
Tiberius, AE28, bronze, reign 14–37, minted 19–20, weight 15.27 g, diameter 28 mm. Obverse: Laureate bust of Tiberius facing right; legend TI CAESAR DIVI AVGVSTI F AVGVSTVS PONT MAXIM COS III IMP VII TR POT XXII. Reverse: Caduceus set vertically between crossed cornucopias; no legend in field; reference RPC I, 3869. Strike: Centered with complete legends; moderate even wear. Toning: Dark brown patina with lighter surface highlights. Bronze coinage of Tiberius from Commagene reflects local provincial minting under the Roman Empire during the early 1st century CE. The obverse titles list his offices and honors held in 19–20 CE, providing a precise chronological marker. The reverse design, with caduceus and cornucopias, is consistent with provincial iconography promoting themes of commerce and abundance. This issue forms part of the civic bronze currency produced for local circulation, supplementing imperial silver and gold coinage, and illustrates the integration of Roman authority with regional symbols in the eastern provinces.
