Description

ATTICA (?). Aegina. AR Obol (silver, 0.44g, 8mm). Ca. 5 Century BC

Obv: Sea turtle

Rev:  Lion head right

Note: An uncertain obol sharing several features with the obols of Aegina, including a turtle on the obverse and an incuse square on the reverse. While Aeginetan fractional silver often displays marine motifs such as dolphins within the incuse, this specimen appears to show a lion instead. The unusual combination of types may warrant further investigation and could be of interest for numismatic study, particularly regarding unofficial, imitative, or regional issues related to the Aeginetan coinage tradition.

Ref: Traité 1046 (var. lion head)
